Teaching Philosophy Statement |
As an educator, I would like to achieve these few goals: 1st Goal: Students should understand the importance of civil engineers in a society and their responsibility. I emphasize the importance of this by discussing the current event, for example, the collapse of Nicoll Highway in Singapore due to the excavation failure. The consequences of a construction failure and how it happens are discussed among students. 2nd Goal: Nurture students towards mastering the technology information through assignment. Students will know how to find information, evaluate and synthesize the information. I developed exercise on engineering failure cases and require student to read through the primary source, identify the main causes of failure, discuss the implication, synthesize the findings, and propose remediation action. 3rd Goal: Students should aware that engineer interacts with the surrounding people. Role playing exercise is used to reinforce this. The activity about a proceeding in a court with engineering failure case involves students to act as engineer, witness, lawyer, expert, or judge. This activity demonstrates the complexity of the issue and students learn the debate and communication skills through the process. |
