Teaching Philosophy Statement |
-A brief statement of your belief(s) about teaching or guiding principle(s) related to your teaching i.e. descriptions regarding your belief in teaching, your belief about the way you teach, the methods you prefer to adopt, etc. to guide you in the teaching and learning process. For me, teaching is a helping relationship. We, as teachers help transform the particular concepts of our field into terms that can be understood by the students we are teaching. So in the classroom I am the facilitator, coach and guide to their understanding and learning. So it is my responsibility to establish a safe and supportive atmosphere for learning. Students must feel comfortable in learning new materials and are not afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. I often remind them that classrooms are the safest place to make mistakes and learn from them. The basic premise is that if we are genuine, caring, emphatic and congruent as teachers, we will be fostering the growth and teaming of others. I believe that the best teachers are those who work hard to help students learn and to give them a freedom in way to get the knowledge. I believe that it is a teacher responsibility to stay current in a field, engaging in research and participating in classes, conferences, seminars, workshops and mentoring that can improve subject matter knowledge. A teacher must be able to make good selections about what to teach and how to re-structure and organize the material. At the same time it is important to stay abreast of current theory and research in the field of teaching. A teacher must know what to teach as well as what is the best way to teach it since engineering courses required a strong fundamental so that the students can expand their knowledge parallel to the new technology base on that fundamental. In addition to different learning process, I often find that students must simply be given the confidence to experiment in the application of newly gained knowledge and to ask questions to promote individual thinking. In an effort to encourage discussion, I am always available to students. Although I arrange formal office hours, students are welcome to make appointments or find me anytime. Finally, I will continue to explore the effective methods of teaching to the students. I believe the professional growth will guide one to realize that to fully enact your beliefs about teaching and learning, there is a lot of room for growth. |
