Teaching Philosophy Statement |
I belief that a university lecturer is expected to conduct research and nurture the education of undergraduate and graduate students. I find it is important to carry out both activities concurrently, and ensure that experiences from research are implemented in courses for which I am responsible. Thus, students will gain from being exposed to current technology and information. In teaching, I endeavor to convince students to understand concepts so that they may apply these concepts in a variety of situations, rather than memorize steps to solve a particular problem. There is a distinct difference between learning and memorization. If I am successful, I expect students will be able to retain concepts more easily. During class, I try to act as a facilitator in the learning process, rather than the deliverer of information. In an effort to encourage discussion between student and lecturer, I am always available to students. Although I arrange formal office hours, students are welcome to make appointments or find me anytime. In everything that I do, I want to be considered as a fair and reasonable lecturer. |
Teaching Goals Statement |
Like all engineering lecturer, I give regular tutorial, laboratory assignments, quizzes and examinations. My assignments include a mix of problems: routine problems build the students' confidence; difficult problems challenge even the brightest. Though some students would rather plug numbers into formulas or follow procedures by rote, I demand that they think for themselves. Students rise only to the level of our expectations, so I set high standards. Nonetheless, students find my exams fair, as most exam problems resemble homework problems. Some exam problems require students to integrate material from different parts of a course. My colleagues borrow my notes and reuse my homework, laboratory, and exam problems: among academics, plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery. In the spirit of continuous improvement, I try something new every semester. When I teach a course a second or third time, I vary the topics so that I can learn something new too. Since teaching is an empirical, personal craft, only by trying a new approach or a new procedure can I discover whether an innovation works for me. |
