TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Teaching Philosophy Statement
A teacher is not someone who only teaches the subject but teaches life as well." (Author Unknown) I strongly feel that; the main role of an educator is not only to teach a subject and the main role of the students is not only to take notes and listen to the lecture. I view learning as a two-way process which needs contributions from both parties involved: the educator and the students. Both parties must enter the lecture hall/ classroom with preparations, both need to contribute ideas and share knowledge and finally both must be able to accept and respect each other ideas and comments professionally. In class, the role of an educator is to facilitate the teaching and learning process. On the other hand, the students must always be ready to share their ideas and knowledge wherever they are asked to do so. If teaching and learning process is dominated by the educator only or when there is no participation from the students, the teaching and learning process will become dull and uninteresting. Therefore, both parties need to play their roles to make sure that the dissemination of knowledge is viewed as something interesting and dynamic not dull and boring. I also believe that a good relationship between an educator and his/her students is very important. We must always treat our students with respect and without prejudice regardless of their age, gender, cultural background, race or religious beliefs. We must see ourselves as someone who is given the responsibility to help and guide our students whenever they need us. In addition, we must also remember that as an educator, we need to be professional and never let our emotion controls our actions when dealing with difficult students. As educators, the focus of our teaching should aim to produce excellent students who can uphold personal integrity in all aspects of their lives. Therefore, apart from making sure that our students understand the subjects that we taught, it is very vital for us to instill into them the good qualities of life through our teaching.

TEACHING GOALS

Teaching Goals Statement
Beyond striving to ensure that students learn the fundamental content of the courses I teach, my objectives as a university teacher are as follows: (a) to foster critical thinking skills; (b) to facilitate the acquisition of lifelong learning skills; (c) to help students develop evidence-based problem-solving strategies; and (d) to prepare students to function as highly skilled and competent engineer across the scope of practice and in my primary teaching area of project management in particular. Furthermore, my overall teaching philosophy is based on two principles, which are supported extensively in the literature: (a) active student learning strongly influences student-learning outcomes; and (b) assessment procedures strongly influence student acquisition of knowledge. Most students cannot stay focused throughout a lecture. After about 10 minutes their attention begins to drift, first for brief moments and then for longer intervals, and by the end of the lecture they are taking in very little and retaining less. So, active learning, problem-based and student-centred learning are the best delivery methods.
