Teaching Philosophy Statement |
Receiving an education in physics and/or engineering is an excellent way to prepare oneself for problem solving and critical thinking tasks to be met in either industry or academic situations. While I do believe the above statement about critical thinking, I also see that there is a waning in the development of practical skills to accompany the knowledge and problem solving abilities that we are teaching the next generation of engineers. I speak from experience on this issue, having worked as an engineer and then academic positions. As an engineer I have a great need for practical skills and knowledge that I feel should have been provided to a greater degree in my own university education. With this in mind it is my goal as a teacher to provide a set of practical skills to enhance the problem solving and critical thinking education that is already well developed in the scientific community. Applied and practical skills can be brought into the classroom in a variety of ways. The use of video that show the real construction steps can enhance the material presented in the textbooks and lectures. I have found that bringing in video and real world tools not only increases the interest of the students, but also actively illustrates ideas that may seem more obscure when given in a lecture alone. Finally, as with most things in life, communication is key. It is not only important to be a good communicator in the lecture but also to open avenues of communication to the student that are two-way paths. It is important for an instructor to gain feedback from his/her students in order to assess both the quality of the students knowledge and the quality of the instructors teaching. Educated in systems and control, I highly value the role of feedback in teaching. Quiz, project, assignment, midterm, etc. are all feedback components, which are very important in teaching performance enhancement. Teaching is a process requiring constant innovative ideas as socio-technological environment involves. Teaching is also a rewarding process where you can learn from the class. Teaching and learning are bi-directionally beneficial. With enthusiasm in teaching, I would like to conclude that Teaching is a pleasure. I enjoy being an educator. |
Teaching Goals Statement |
I see my role as a lecturer to guide my students through the learning process. I believe my students should leave my classroom with a solid foundation in basic construction management concepts, critical thinking skills and practical application skills to solve real-worldproblems. I will provide them the learning environment to face these challenges. To make sure the student can gain knowledge,i believe lectures should be structured, have interesting contents, and practical. Assessment tasks should have clear criteria, be linked to lecture contents, and diverse. Teaching methods should be diverse and be supported by organized lecture notes. Lectures should also communicate clearly, respond to enquiries in a timely manner, and give valuable feedback on student performance. Lastly, lecturers should be perceived as being knowledgeable, enthusiastic, approachable, helpful, and considerate. In the midst of contemporary teaching and learning methods, these factors are not new. However, lecturers should realize that students are unlikely to be satisfied when these fundamental factors are not incorporated into their teaching. |
