TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Teaching Philosophy Statement
In retrospect, the teaching philosophy revolves around the premise that knowledge and civilization could be developed and advanced through the meeting and sharing of differing ideas and experiences for the betterment of humanity and the environment. Ideas and innovations are the crucial fuels that drive the engine of scientific, technological, economic and social progresses forward towards commonly aspired life’s ideals. As such, this pool of collective wisdom is an invaluable heritage of humanity that needs to be protected, expanded and propagated through the generational divides so as to preserve the virtues and abundances of inherited enlightenment in perpetuity. It will also serve as a beacon of hope shining through the raging storm of uncertainty and ignorance, preserving the blessing of cultured, rational existence, and salvaging humanity from rescinding back into primitive, instinctive existence. Many a civilization had been consigned to historical oblivion due to decadence and corruption resulting from anachronistic tendency of restricting the natural flow and nurturing of ideas and information among its populace.

Perhaps no better demonstration can be found for this dynamic process of symbiotic exchange of ideas and experiences than in the academic field. Teaching involves both the formal and informal processes of instruction and guidance conducted by adequately trained and informed entities for the purpose of equipping and preparing the targeted audiences (particularly the student generation) towards realising personal as well as national aspirations and ideals for enlightenment, preservation, progress, prosperity and peace. Though the flow of information traditionally passes from the instructors to the instructed, this need not be the case anymore. The instructed of varying awareness levels may participate in the on-going teaching and learning processes by contributing novel ideas and experiences, and hence breathing in fresh perspectives and life into what likely to be accepted but anachronistic tendencies. To be sure, information thus exchanged needs to be of such exquisite value and con-current to be of any real benefit and relevance to the instructed, and should remain so for foreseeable future.

My philosophy in performing the assigned teaching duties encompasses all the aspirations outlined above. In discharging these immense trusts bestowed upon me by the university, I have set myself to not only be a mentor or instructor to my charge, but also a councillor and confidant in academic as well as personal matters.

As a mentor or instructor, I had spared no effort to ensure that the academic syllabi were delivered thoroughly in systematic and timely fashions so as to instil good understanding and acceptance of unfamiliar knowledge among my charge. I had engaged various methods of teaching delivery including lectures, tutorials and/or laboratory demonstrations so as to give a sense of wholeness for the subject being taught as well as appreciation for the problems’ variability. Invoking and relating my years as a practising engineer, I had strived to show to my students the immediate applicability of what were being taught to the real deal, in the hope of highlighting and reinforcing the necessities and desires for learning a specific knowledge and skills for what shall one day be their own. In no instance were free expressions of thoughts and flare of enthusiasm among them impeded. On the contrary, active participation in mental discourses was encouraged to reinvigorate or challenge established facts, and thus obtains level of awareness far greater than that provided by the confine of university syllabi. Moreover, students were exhorted to explore and embrace diverging bodies of thoughts to obtain a wider world view, humility and tolerance, particularly in relation to the chosen field of study. Through this it is hoped that the students will attain adequate mental development, maturity and confidence to engage the world head on in whatever capacity that they may have to assume, and be a useful and dutiful members of the community.

As a councillor and confidant, I had seek to understand the physiological changes as well as mental anguish that may beset students in the prime of youth due to incessant academic as well as social expectations in their drives to achieve academic accolade and recognition. These trepidations may come in the form and multiplicity of assignments, quizzes, tests, presentations, examinations, peer influences, etc. In dealing with these issues, I had offered advisement, guidance and motivation in the guise of continual study, mental picture preparation, proper time management, correct attitude and ethics, personal encouragement and support as well as emphasising on the achievability of such aspirations through the examples of past achievements.

TEACHING GOALS

Teaching Goals Statement
On the internal level, my goal involves gradual assumption of such pertinent knowledge, experience and skills that would enable self-development and actualization in the academic as well as industrial fields. Areas of concern include civil engineering and many other associated expertise that would make the core study focus more comprehensible, comprehensive and complementive.

On the external level, my goal involves transference and nurturing of such pertinent knowledge, experience and skills to my fellows in humanity particularly those students under my charge so as to enable gradual but sure development of inherent human potential and capacity as well as confidence for the perpetuation of human civilization and well-being.
