TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Teaching Philosophy Statement
-Naturally, I'm love teaching and to share knowledge. I am a trained teacher and have obtained my first degree in teaching. I have been fortunate enough to have a wide variety of teaching experiences as a primary school teacher at S.M.J.K. (Tamil) Kuala Terla, Cameron Highlands, secondary school trainee teacher at Sekolah Menengah Syed Sheh Baraqbah, Penang & Sekolah Menengah Syed Putra, Perlis and Tutor for Geographic Information System classes at the Universiti Sains Malaysia. Teaching undergraduates has been gratifying not only in my success in introducing students to a world of critical inquiry, but also in the way in which addressing my student's difficulties with analytical writing and thinking has revitalized and refined my own research and writing. In all of my teaching experiences, I've tried to keep two things in mind: first, that although coverage of materials is crucial, it's more important to teach students skills than things, and secondly, that student learns skills best through an interactive teaching style that demands their participation and challenges their abilities. My teaching philosophy has both traditional and radical roots, and rest, finally, on making myself not so much an expert in my field, but a partner in learning. In the long term, the greatest gift I can give to my students is to make myself obsolete. Moses Maimonides, has claimed that the highest degree of charity is to place a person through employment or education, in a position where he or she can dispense with other people's aid. This is precisely what I hope to do for my students: I don't so much want to give undergraduate students a reading of text, as to teach them to read, not just this particular text but any text literary, journalistic, engineering, visual, or mufti -medial. Paulo Friere has called such an approach to teaching a liberation pedagogy, in which professors are no longer the single source of knowledge in the classroom but rather are engaged in helping students move from passive recipients to active creators of knowledge and ideas. I continue to learn from experience and from the literature about the dynamics of teaching and about my discipline so I can improve my effectiveness as an instructor.
